Posted: 12 Sep 2011 06:29 AM PDT You started a website. You installed some tracking software or a stat checking system so you can monitor your visits. And maybe you got your first ad click, or somebody left a comment on your site. Things are happening. And then the next day you check your stats on your site, and…..nothing. Somewhat discouraged, you poke around the web, and find a way to get a small burst of social traffic. Maybe you figure out how to game Stumbleupon or you have a small army of Facebook fans that you direct to your page. Maybe your friend has a huge twitter following and he tweets about one of your articles. Suddenly, you get a small burst of traffic. You look at your stats and there is a nice little spike. One hundred visits in a single day! It feels good. It feels like progress. And you say to yourself “Those numbers are real people! People who visited my site!” And so you are inclined to chase more of that “easy traffic.” In a word: Don’t. It’s not worth it. Why you should focus on search engine traffic insteadIt is easy to try to justify chasing social traffic. “The social traffic might help me to get links some day” you might argue. Or you might argue “I can build up a large readership using social traffic.” But the fact is that search engine traffic is far more powerful, and this is where you should focus your efforts. This is because search engine traffic is: * Recurring. It shows up day after day. * Commercial. People using search engines have more commercial intent than people using social media services. People using Facebook do not generally have their credit card out, ready to buy stuff. This does not bode well for advertising or monetizing the traffic that you get from social sources. People using a search engine are more likely to be in “buying mode.” Therefore, search engine traffic is more valuable from a commercial standpoint. * Targeted. Social traffic shows up and the people visiting your site were not searching for your topic. People who find you through search engines have already zeroed in on your topic through the use of keywords. * Stable. Search engine traffic tends to remain fairly stable once you are established. (This is how online earnings can lean toward being “passive” in nature). What actions to take in order to increase your search engine trafficSo how can you increase your search engine traffic? Follow the TKA program. It has been designed from the ground up to focus on building recurring search engine traffic. The reason for this is because that is the easiest way to build a steady income. And what does the TKA program suggest that you do? Build quality web pages and promote them with links. This is still the essence of our program. However, a shift has been made from focusing on volume toward focusing on quality instead. It is tricky to define “quality” in a world where computer bots scan web pages to determine relevance, but that does not mean that we can avoid the question. One strong definition of “quality” on the web is to provide real value to the searcher based on your own unique experiences. If you publish a quality article on your site and put plenty of “you” into it, then you are building something sustainable. If you publish an article that anyone could have wrote and it only provides generic information found elsewhere on the web, then it probably will not be receiving search engine traffic 5 years down the road from now. It is not sustainable. When building search engine traffic to your website, focus on sustainability rather than fast growth. Do this by focusing on quality and personal insight in your articles, rather than just pumping out sheer volume. |
