Navigating the Emotional Minefield of Building an Online Income

As any seasoned internet marketer will tell you, making money online can be a tough mental game and an emotional roller coaster all at the same time.

Furthermore, anyone who sticks it out and continues to build an online business is bound to be “tested” at one time or another. Everything will not run perfectly at all times. There will always be ups and downs, especially in the beginning.

So let’s take a closer look at how to deal with it all. Specifically, we are going to look at how each of these things can become a roadblock for you on the way to building your online business:

1) Attitude.
2) Failure.
3) Doubt.
4) Disappointment.

A positive attitude will multiply your income in the long run

A bad attitude sabotages your internet marketing efforts: If you get a bad attitude about your online business, everything can be negatively affected. From generating new ideas to your daily production and output numbers, everything can quickly go downhill if you are not remaining optimistic.

This should be obvious to anyone but when YOU are the one with the bad attitude it is pretty difficult to catch yourself.

Therefore, it helps to practice optimism on a regular basis, and put forth a strong effort to match any optimistic predictions. Success breeds success, so focus on your small wins.

Practicing a positive attitude helps you as an internet marketer: Daily production should be a strong focus. What did you do today in order to grow your business?

Specifically, what actions did you take today that will lead to future income?

Be positive about what you actually accomplished today.

Think positive, get excited about your plans, and then put in the work to make them happen. This is how a positive attitude serves you well in internet marketing: by pushing you to do the work that matters.

Actions you can take to improve your attitude and increase optimism:

* Get a whiteboard and prop it up where you can see it from your computer. Write down your monthly income goal at the top of it and then write down your daily production goals below it.

* Feel good about work produced rather than income earned. The income comes later. It takes time for the rewards to kick in. Get excited about work completed.

* Check traffic logs, stats, and earnings less frequently. Do it weekly or monthly rather than daily. If you get discouraged when seeing low income numbers, focus instead on how much work you are getting done each day, and use that as your positive motivation. Know that the income will come later if you build quality pages and promote them with links.

Dealing with failure poorly can sabotage your internet marketing efforts: If you check your income or your traffic and it is low, and this causes you to produce less work for the day, then you have a serious problem in your work flow. Less work today = less future income.

If small failures cause you to demotivate, then you need to find a way to overcome this.

Dealing with failure effectively helps you as an internet marketer: If you can find a way to deal with your failures and keep pressing on, creating outstanding content and then promoting it, then you will do well in the long run.

Think about a 3 year timeline or a 5 year timeline: if you can forge ahead and create quality content every single day, and you keep promoting that content, what is it going to matter in 3 years if you had a bad day or even a bad month or two?

In the long run, it is your daily output that adds up to a healthy income stream.

Actions you can take to help deal with failure:

* If you get demotivated by seeing small failures–such as a low or zero earning day with AdSense–then stop checking it every day. Only check it monthly, or have a trusted family member check it for you if you are paranoid about it.

* Ignore your failures and focus on work produced. If your “failures” are your serp positions, then stop looking at them. If your failures are your daily earnings, then switch to checking monthly.

Doubting yourself is the quickest way to stall your earnings from growing

Overcoming doubt helps you as an internet marketer: When you see evidence that this works, your eyes should light up. When you have that first $10 dollar day with Adsense, you should exclaim to yourself “That is $300 bucks per month of extra income!” Get excited when you see evidence of the process. This is how to overcome your doubts. Doing so helps give you permission to take more action and produce more work.

Actions you can take to help deal with doubt:

* Find the inspiration that you need to work hard. I remember getting that excitement and inspiration from seeing “money shots”….pictures of AdSense earnings that people posted online.

* Chat with people in our forums who have substantial regular earnings. See that they did nothing special other than put in the work, and that their earnings could be your earnings.

* Push yourself to produce lots of work online until you start getting results, no matter how small. Thus you can prove to yourself that it works, and erase all doubt. (What have you got to lose….the time is going to go by anyway. Might as well see if you can produce income online, no?)

Disappointments in your online journey are just minor setbacks. Flick them aside like a pesky fly. Crush them with more action.

Disappointments can sabotage your production: If your disappointment causes you to work less, this is bad. Less output = less future income.

Therefore, overcoming disappointments helps you as an internet marketer: A major disappointment can cause people to give up entirely. But most people who have found success with online marketing have been through some major ups and downs, and at one point, probably lost an entire website that was once profitable.

You can be deindexed, penalized, lose an account, lose traffic, be banned from various programs, and so on.

However, take a long term view of things, and picture your online business 5 years from now if you press on and overcome a disappointment. Is it really going to matter in 5 years that you suffered this setback?

Not after 5 years. Not if you are pushing yourself to build a sustainable income every day, focusing on quality, and following the program.

In the long run, any disappointments you might experience today are just minor setbacks. They might seem devastating now, but if you put in consistent work, then any disappointment today is just a little blip on your long path to success.

Actions you can take to help deal with disappointments:

* Make your strongest measure of success your amount of work produced. Track your work output and push yourself to keep improving it.

* Celebrate tiny victories, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. Know that the nature of online marketing means that you will scale these small victories into major success as time goes on.

When we say that you should “take massive action” what we really mean is that you should:

1) Produce quality articles.
2) Promote those articles with links.

But the idea is that you should do this stuff a lot.

If you just write one article every weekend and you never really get around to promotion or link building, then guess what? Your business is not going to take off.

But if you take massive action, and start producing real work every single day, then you can easily overcome all of the negative emotions listed above. Minor setbacks will be “minor” because the amount of work you do and your dedication to your long term goals will be so strong and solid.

Follow the program and take massive action, regardless of how your day-to-day business is doing. This is the key to success. Overcome negative emotions by taking positive action and creating quality articles. Do it over and over again and eventually you will have a sustainable business.
